The lightning stone! (Utah, USA). This magnetite was struck by lightning, making it naturally magnetic. Lodestones play an important role in folk history as well as th discovery of magnetism. They were also used to charge compass needles in early navigation. This little kit encourages investions into magnetism and combined with a bowl of water and a sponge can be used to make your own compass (just unwind the paper clip and charge it with the lodestone). If you include iron filings or small compasses you can also investigate magnetic fields.
